PICTURE YOURSELF: On a beautiful beach in Greece, eating a juicy fat kebab as you watch the sunset go down. Wouldn’t that seem perfect? Okay time to sink back in to reality for a second, unless you have heaps of $$$$, It can get quiet difficult financially. Arghh, bills it’s a never ending cycle.
I am here to give you my top 5 mind blowing tips to help you have your dream holiday escape. You will be on a plane to Greece stuffing your face with kebabs and greek salad in no time.Β
THE MONEY JAR SYSTEM
It sounds so simple, but believe me this method works. Anytime you go for a late Maccas Run or you have left over change from your coffee in the morning, add it to your money Β jar. By the time you know it, the jar will be overflowing with coins ! Then just before you leave for your trip, head over to the bank and exchange the coins into cash. Now you have all this extra cash you can use for your fancy cocktails.Β
SELL YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS
Do you have a dress you promise yourself you will wear one day, but that day still hasn’t come? Do you have endless amounts of makeup or books that you think it may come in to good use one day? ** cough cough me**. Well stop hoarding and start selling!! Honestly this is a perfect way to make some extra money on the side. You can sell your unwanted items on Facebook, Gumtree, Instagram etc. Watch the money slide in to your bank account ! $$$$$
SLIGHTLY ADJUST YOUR WAY OF LIVING
We all have days where we would rather just order Uber Eats instead of cooking. We all have days where we would rather just keep the air con going then having the windows open. WE ARE ONLY HUMAN ! But slight changes could literally help you save.
- Instead of eating out 4 times a week, try reducing it to 1-2.
- Instead of catching Ubers and Taxis to work, why not try public transport?
- Instead of buying the expensive brand of groceries, why not try for a cheaper alternative?Β
- Instead of singing in the shower for 30 minutes, why not sing in the show for 10 minutes?
SET ASIDE MONEY EACH WEEK (OPEN ANOTHER ACCOUNT)
You may get payed weekly, fortnightly or even monthly. My suggestion to you all is create another account and call it something along the lines of, “travel savings”. Each time you get paid,Β put aside a slight portion of your pay and watch it grow over the months. This will not only guide you to save money, but it will also put you in a positive mindset about your savings, which will then motivate you to keep going.
HAVE A MONEY MINDED MINDSETΒ
We all know how tempting it is to go shopping and buy the latest bag or go buy the most expensive dessert on the menu! But think about it realistically, would you rather eat a dessert that your familiar with and that you eat all the time or would you rather a local dessert overseas that you have never tried before? I know which one I would be choosing. It all comes down to your mindset. You could set all of these goals down on paper, but if your mindset isn’t in the right place, it could truly effect the end result of saving.Β

Great ideas! I think it also helps to have a plan of where you want to travel and create a budget for it. Saving for the trip then becomes much more focused when you already have a concrete destination and expenditure plan.

I do a lot of these!! Thank God for my travel savings account – I put in $100 every paycheck (I get paid the 15th and 30th/last day of the month) plus any extra checks like rebates, etc. I had to save for a new top for my convertible, so the largest chunk will go for that but heck, it’s better than charging it! Wonderful post and great ideas.

The money jar system sounds great but do you think it works well? Hahah, might give it a try

Yes it does because over time the money will just slowly increase in the jar without you even noticing ! π Its a great way for a bit of extra change π

Cooking at home and having friends over for drinks or dinner rather than going out are such easy ways to save money! Any time we are about to UberEats, we think about our next vacation and how much enjoyable it will be to spend another $50 on indulging there, put down out phone, and head to the kitchen.

I don’t know about a jar, but a separate account sounds like a good idea. Thanks

I have a money jar and put it all the cents from my wallet, 2 EUR and 10% of the money I get as a gift. I have one in my apartment and one at my parents house, so there is no excuse. It works really amazing. And then of course I also try to save in other ways.

Very good. I like the money jar idea. Mine is an envelope: anything I don’t spend at the pub/restaurant/markets goes in the envelope for travel. I make an effort that way not to overspend
